What is Live Action Role Playing?

A live action role-playing game (LARP) is a form of role-playing game where the participants physically portray their characters.[1] The players pursue goals within a fictional setting represented by real-world environments while interacting with each other in character. The outcome of player actions may be mediated by game rules or determined by consensus among players. Event arrangers called gamemasters decide the setting and rules to be used and facilitate play. We organize a Nordic larp[1] , this is a term for shared larp traditions in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. What sets the Nordic larp traditions apart from others is a strong emphasis on collaboration and collective creation, unobtrusive rules, as well as a rich variety of play styles and settings sometimes including heavy themes.

Is your game based on existing creative works?

Yes and no, we are inspired by certain movies, books, series, graphic novels and art but we do not try to emulate any of them. Our writers and visual artists are enthusiastic, creative people that want to bring their own unique flavor to the mix. This results in a sweet smelling potpourri of larpy goodness and a specific style for all Tenebra events.

Do you use AI in any way?

We do sometimes and we are very conscious of the problems that come with it.

So much so that we have a policy regarding the use of AI within our team, for more information, read our AI policy

I read you use type 2 fun, what are the different types of fun?

There is a Fun Scale that is used to describe the different types of fun a person can experience:

Type 1: Simple fun, good fun, enjoyable while it is happening. Example: hearing a joke, enjoying a sunny afternoon, dancing the night away…

Type 2: Is miserable while it’s happening but fun in retrospect. Example: pushing yourself to read your self made poem out loud at a show and tell, or walking down that dark corridor all alone because your friend needs your help.

Type 3: is not fun at all, not even in retrospect. It usually starts out with the best intentions but ends up miserable. Afterwards you think , what the hell was I doing? Somebody stop me next time! Example: pushing your physical or emotional limits too far in an activity so you cross your own boundaries.

How does your registration process work?

See Registration.

Do you have a flagging system?

Yes we do. We acknowledge the importance of safety thus we have a flagging system in place. Beware that the way we utilize flagging might differ from other organizations. For more info, read our Flagging policy.

Why are there different prices?

We ask different prices for different rooms. Some rooms have a bathroom attached, some don’t. Some rooms accommodate only two people, some more. This way we hope to make the game accessible for people with different budgets. We also offer the possibility to pay for sponsored tickets, this way we can offer social tickets.

Can I cancel my registration?

Yes you can, more information about canceling can be found here.

When does the casting of character roles start and how does it work?

For more information about our casting procedure, read the Casting of characters.

What if I am not happy with the character role I receive?

If you are not happy with your received role you can always contact us to work it out.

What should I wear / bring with me?

When you receive your player guide for your character, you will also receive a mood board that can help get you inspired for your costume. Players need to bring their own costumes and props to bring the character to life. We ask you to NOT bring any real weapons or anything that is prohibited by law.

Do I need a sleeping bag / sheets?

This depends on our location, please check here for location requirements regarding our active case.

What if I arrive late?

Please let us know in advance when you are experiencing delays in travel. You can contact our head of Department Logistics by calling the number you received in your player guide. We will help facilitate your arrival and introduction into the game as best as we can.

How accessible is the game for people with disabilities?

This depends a lot on location and the nature of our active case. For more information about the accessibility of our active case: check Accessibility

Will there be combat involved?

It is possible but avoidable.

Our gaming mechanics are designed for you to have physical altercations should you wish without the need for calibration during a scene. We will elaborate on this during workshops. You can also read more under Mechanics.

Is your game LGBTQIA+ friendly?

We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment, a safe place to explore and play. We do not discriminate nor judge but keep in mind that the historical theme of our setting can have social  consequences. Any player can portray any gender but not every character can be played in a chosen gender. Some characters are assigned a gender for historical accuracy. Read more about the setting and roles of our active case here.

Is the game physically demanding?

It can be, however this depends on the active case. To understand the physical aspect of our active case, you can find more info here

Can my character die during the game?

Yes, however… There are two ways a character might die during the game.

1) You chose to die (for whatever reason)  and have calibrated this with us when/where/how.

2) You made an obvious choice in the game, well aware of the deadly consequences (physically fighting a large and deadly creature/ putting a loaded gun to your head and pulling the trigger)

Should you die then you will meet the Fate Gods of Tenebra, together we decide where your path will lead from here on.

Are there things I am not allowed to do?

Everything that is considered illegal or any actions with the intent of physically or emotionally hurting someone. For more information: read our Code of conduct

What if I get scared?

We hope you get scared! Scaring you is our goal! But when you get overwhelmed by real live fear you can always opt out or use other mechanics to step out of the situation.

We have a dedicated psychologist that you can summon with the press of a button and there is a safe room you can use. We do want to stress that our game is not for everyone and that we are looking for players who enjoy type 2 fun and who want to push themselves in search of the adrenaline rush. If you don’t enjoy horror movies or a good scare then this is just not the larp for you.

Can I leave the event?

Yes. You can leave any time you like. Just give us a sign that you will be leaving, no need for explanation. We do, however, offer a safety person you can talk things through with, if you wish.

Does the game continue at night?

Yes and no. There will be night play during certain hours, we use an in-game bedtime after which the game continues even though your character has gone to sleep. We agree in advance on an out-game bedtime as well after which the game stops in the bedrooms but can continue elsewhere for those who wish to play further. This way you are not disturbed in your real sleep.

What if I want to go to bed early?

In each room you will find a ‘do not disturb’ sign that you can hang on your door. This is a sign for us that the players inside this room wish to stop playing until next morning.

Are the bedrooms in-game zones?

They are until the out-game bed time starts.

Is the fake blood edible?

Yes,the blood that you as a participant have access to is edible. We make our own fresh, sweet and vegan blood. The blood that can appear on monsters might not be. Just don’t go licking any of them and you’re fine.

Will my costume get dirty / stained / damaged?

It could but not intentionally by us. If you don’t want your antique nightgown to get dirty then it is best not to wear it when going out into the forest at night.

What about safety during the game?

There are many mechanics we use to ensure safety and fun for everyone. A safe room is there for you to use when feeling overwhelmed or overstimulated. A licensed female psychologist is on site and can be summoned by pressing a button in the safe room. Rather talk to a man? We have a male licensed confidential counselor as well.

More information about our mechanics.

More information about our emotional safety support.

Are there workshops?

Yes. Prior to playing we have workshops covering all different aspects of our event to ensure a smooth, fun and safe game. You will receive more information about our workshops in your player’s guide.

Can I use my mobile phone during the game?

We will ask you to keep your mobile phone in your room. You can use them when you need them but only in an out-game capacity. Our active case at this moment does not allow mobile phones because they are an anachronism.

What will I eat / drink?

Tasty and fresh food served by a catering team that has had a lot of experience in cooking for thematic events. For drinks we serve water/ a variety of sodas/ tea and coffee. Fresh fruit, sweet and salty snacks will be present most of the time. We will not serve alcohol, Tenebra is a dry event.

What about my food allergies?

During sign up you can provide us with the details about your specific food needs. The catering team will take this into account.

No, we are a dry event. We have a zero tolerance for people who are drunk. Our game can get very emotional and scary thus making it dangerous for people under the obvious influence of alcohol or anyone they come into contact with. Needless to say, we also do not tolerate drugs.

If your medicine needs a cool and dry place we will have a designated fridge for this purpose. Please mention this during your sign up.
